UKCA Replaces the CE Mark

Reading time: 3 minutes

Is UKCA replacing CE?

Yes, for products sold in Great Britain, UKCA marking is replacing CE (Conformité Européenne) marking.

As a result of the United Kingdom's (UK) departure from the European Union (EU), the UKCA marking has been introduced to demonstrate compliance with UK regulations for products sold in Great Britain, rather than with EU regulations for products sold in the European Economic Area (EEA). Although CE marking is still recognised in the EU and products with CE marking can still be sold in the EU.

What’s the difference between CE marking and UKCA marking?

UKCA and CE are not the same, but they are similar in terms of demonstrating compliance with health, safety, and environmental protection regulations. However, while CE marking is recognised in the EU, UKCA marking is not and products with UKCA marking cannot be sold in the EU.

UKCA marking is a new type of conformity assessment marking that is being introduced in the UK following the end of the Brexit transition period on December 31, 2020. It is used to demonstrate compliance with UK regulations for certain products being sold in England, Scotland, and Wales.

The CE marking and reversed epsilon marking can still be used on the GB market until 31 December 2024.

When will the CE mark be phased out in the UK?

CE marking is not being phased out in the UK, but it will no longer be recognised for certain products sold in Great Britain as of 1 January 2021.

Instead, for those products, the new UKCA marking has been introduced to demonstrate compliance with UK regulations. CE marking is still recognised in the EU and products with CE marking can still be sold in the EU.

It's important to note that the situation may change depending on the outcome of ongoing negotiations between the UK and the EU.

Is UKCA marking mandatory?

Yes, UKCA marking is mandatory for certain products being sold in Great Britain that were previously required to have CE marking.

UKCA marking demonstrates compliance with UK regulations for products sold in Great Britain, rather than with EU regulations for products sold in the EEA. The UKCA marking requirement applies to a range of products, including but not limited to construction products, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), medical devices, and certain types of machinery.

It's important for manufacturers and suppliers to ensure that their products comply with the relevant UK regulations and carry the correct marking before selling them in Great Britain. Failure to comply with the UKCA marking requirements can result in enforcement action and financial penalties.
