Analysing the rising popularity of allotments

Data from social media platform TikTok has found that the hashtag #allotment has increased from a relative volume value of 40 during the week commencing Sunday December 15th 2024 to the peak popularity value of 100 for the week commencing Sunday February 16th 2025.

Google Trends has seen a similar pattern, with the search term ‘allotment’ rising from an interest value of 55 out of 100 for the week commencing Sunday December 22nd 2024 to a value of 90 in the week commencing Sunday February 23rd 2025.

It is clear from this data that more people are searching for information about this small piece of land and are also enjoying social media videos focusing on these plots.

How to start an allotment or kitchen garden

Those with a new allotment or creating a kitchen garden will be able to do some of the initial tasks themselves, such as clearing a plot of unwanted materials. However, some jobs will see professional gardeners and those in the trade being called in to help.

Any unwanted shrubs, trees and woody plants will need to be cut down and dug out, with our landscaping and gardening hire equipment being great for you to transform this outdoor space on these occasions.

Those setting up their plot will need adequate water access to keep plants hydrated too. So be ready to assist property owners with setting up water storage solutions in their outdoor space, such as installing water butts to collect rainwater and fitting hose pipes to redistribute collected water around an allotment or kitchen garden.

Allotment and kitchen garden layout ideas

You should also take the time to learn about the best ways to layout an allotment or kitchen garden, as the way in which crops are arranged around this plot of land could affect how well they grow.

Mapping out pathways around this space is particularly important here, so that people using the land will not keep walking over beds and ruining whatever is being grown.

If working with a small space, look to create a central pathway that’s bordered by raised beds on either side, so that access to crops is simple. For larger environments, a pair of paths running opposite each other will be ideal as it opens the door to more flexible planting options.

No matter the layout chosen, make sure to use a mixture of gravel and sand to secure a path’s foundations and then finish off a path with either lawn turf or bark chippings depending on a property owner’s preference.

You should encourage the following additional features to be designed into an allotment space or next to a kitchen garden as well:

  • A shed for safely and securely storing any garden equipment.

  • Compost bins to help with recycling garden waste.

  • Ponds to increase biodiversity around a plot.
